NEW YORK, NY.- Phillips’ New York single-owner sale, The Curious Collector: Important Photographs from the Collection of Dr. Anthony Terrana, a breathtaking survey of the history of photography, and the seasonal various-owners Photographs sale realized stellar results totaling a combined $8,350,125/£5,518,005/€6,502,451, selling 85% by lot and 89% by value.

Identical Twins Cathleen (I) and Colleen, Roselle, N.J., 1967 by Diane Arbus, the top lot of the evening sale sold for $602,500, almost three times the high estimate, igniting dynamic and competitive bidding, resulting in a new world auction record for the artist.

Works by László Moholy-Nagy, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Sally Mann, Constantin Brancusi, Francesca Woodman, Lewis Wicks Hines and Herb Ritts, also fetched prices well over their high estimates. The strength of the market for emerging photographers was also confirmed through the strong performance of signature works by Alex Prager, Mickalene Thomas, Angela Strassheim and Pieter Hugo.

“The collection of Dr. Anthony Terrana totaled over $5,000,000, which demonstrates Phillips’ strength in successfully offering private collections and reaching outstanding results, such as Diane Arbus’ new world auction record. Combined with the results of our various owners sale, results achieved were consistently high for the leading names in the medium, from Modernists such as László Moholgy-Nagy and André Kertész to contemporary leaders such as Hiroshi Sugimoto and Richard Misrach. We are confident that the international demand for photographs will continue to develop.” Vanessa Kramer Hallett, Director and Worldwide Head of Photographs.
