Michaan's Fine Art features early 20th century Mora, Bisttram's "Reflections," rare Matisse
Emil Bisttram (American 1895-1976), Reflection. Oil on canvas, 24 x 34 inches / 61 x 86.4 centimeters. Estimate: $20,000 / 30,000.

ALAMEDA, CA.- Michaan’s Fine Art Auction on June 7, 2013 includes over 150 lots of 19th and 20th century American and European paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs.

Francis Luis Mora’s “The Pirate & the Prisoner,” estimated at $25,000-35,000, depicts two children, very likely the artist’s niece and nephew, playing out the title scenario. A lad is shown standing victoriously over his “prisoner,” a delicately frocked young girl. The piece is dated to 1906, wearing exhibition labels from the Oakland Museum and the Museum of History in Los Angeles. Mora’s works are currently held by or on display in thirty-four museums and he has won numerous medals and awards within the artistic community.

A painting by Emil Bisttram titled “Reflections” will be offered at an estimate of $20,000-30,000. Revered for his works of a nuanced, spiritual quality, Bisttram studied mural painting in Mexico under Diego Rivera. Later in his career, Bisttram and fellow artist Raymond Jonson organized the Transcendental Painting Group in New Mexico. The group promoted paintings to inspire and further spirituality within their community at large.

Henry Matisse’s “Le Frégote” stands as one of the rarest pieces offered, as it is only one of twenty-five prints that were created ($10,000-15,000). Matisse’s sense of modernity and uncomplicated composition are clearly seen in the linocut of the lounging nude. This master of the 20th century has created a body of work that has spanned over a half-century and cemented him as a leading figure in modern art.

From a private California collection is Mary DeNeale Morgan’s oil painting “Evangeline” ($20,000-40,000). “Evangeline” gives nod to the epic poem, “Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, published in 1847. In 1928, the editors of “Scribner’s” magazine named DeNeale Morgan one of the nation’s foremost women artists. The painting is accompanied by a custom frame by Richard Tobey as well as a VHS video of the 1920s silent film “Geraldine,” as the piece was featured in the movie.

Iconic American cartoonist Charles Schulz’s four panel cartoon strip “Flying Ace Reporting for Duty, 1966” is a delightful work on paper available in the sale. The animation features Snoopy, one of the nations most beloved characters from the “Peanuts” cartoon series. Snoopy is shown imagining he is a World War II flying ace, taking his mission with the utmost importance. This highly collectible piece will be offered at an auction estimate of $10,000-15,000.

Part artist, part illusionist, M.C. Escher’s art has amazed and instilled wonder in millions. His imaginations of wondrous, fantastical worlds and images is played out in the lithograph “Belvedere,” to be auctioned at an estimate of $15,000-20,000.

“The Regal Matron” by Francis Cotes is a wonderful example of finely painted classical portraiture ($15,000-25,000). The oil on canvas dates to the late 18th century and depicts an ornately frocked society woman. Cotes oil paintings are held in the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the National Museum of Wales.

A seminal image is found in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s “La Revue Blanche, 1895” ($15,000-20,000). The French post-impressionist painter elevated advertisement to the realm of fine art in an amazingly short period of time, as he died at the age of 36 with only a decade long career. The lithograph depicts an elegant woman of the time, clocked in a fur stole with matching hand muff and plumed chapeau.
