NEW YORK, NY.- Bertrand Delacroix Gallery announces Gueule de Bois, a solo exhibition of new work by French artist Quentin Garel. Garel is well known internationally for his distinctive bronze animal busts and skulls. Garels debut solo show at BDG will feature large scale bronze sculptures and charcoal sketches. His work has been exhibited in prestigious European galleries and art fairs around the world.
The scale, intricate detail and impeccable quality of Garels bronze sculptures are striking. He begins his creative process with large charcoal drawings, which serve as preliminary studies for his sculptures. These highly technical works on paper provide a revealing look into his time and labor intensive work, and often depict a series of visible underdrawings with fully developed forms overlapping. Garels drawings are almost sculptural in the sense that many of them present the subject from several different angles. After careful planning in his studio, Garel carves his animal busts and skulls in wood or Styrofoam, which he uses to cast limited edition bronze and/or polychrome sculptures. His patinas are exceptional as the works appear to be made of actual weathered wood or bone. Both Garels sculptures and drawings demonstrate his innate artistic intelligence and deep comprehension of the anatomy of his subjects.
Born in 1975 in France, Garel received 5 prestigious awards for drawing and sculpting from institutions including the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Paris and the Salon de Mai, Paris. Garel has been commissioned for several notable public installations, including a series of bronze sculptures in the Public Gardens in Lille, France. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, and his work appears in public and private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. He currently lives and works in Normandy, France.
