NEW YORK, NY.- Doyle New York’s May 8, 2013 auction of American Art showcases exceptional works of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

One of the sale’s highlights is Everett Shinn’s (American, 1876-1953) Curtain Call, a pastel on paper executed in 1933 (est. $90,000-110,000). Like Degas, Shinn was fascinated by the effects of artificial theatrical lighting on the faces, costumes and props of the performers. In the present work, a resplendent cabaret performer, tipping her top hat in acknowledgement of the accolades of an unseen audience, epitomizes Shinn's theatrical themes.

By John Henry Twachtman (American, 1853-1902) is a marvelous view of Waterfall, Yellowstone (est. $80,000-120,000). The work is one of sixteen scenes painted during Twachtman's 1895 trip to Yellowstone. This work, the last in the series, shows the falls from the closest angle, concentrating the viewer's attention on qualities of the painted surface as much as on the falls. Also by Twachtman is The Cascade in Spring (est.$70,000-90,000). This painting is among a group of images Twachtman created in the 1890s of the waterfall on Horseneck Brook, situated behind his home in Greenwich, CT.

John French Sloan (American, 1871-1951) is represented by the 1915 view of Breezy Day, Gloucester, Mass (est. $40,000-60,000). Sloan began to summer in Gloucester in 1913 and worked for the first time en plein aire. His landscapes and seascapes reflected a lighter, brighter tonality than heretofore.

Mother and Child, a bronze executed in 1914 Paul Manship (American, 1885-1966), is a study for the unique life-size bronze sculpture of the same title from 1917, which Manship made for the garden of Charles Schwab in Lorett, PA (est. $25,000-45,000).

Representing Jean MacLane (American, 1878-1964) is an engaging work titled Tea Time (est. $18,000-22,000). The identities of the enchanting children depicted are not known. Her own children were frequent models for her paintings, though MacLane also painted many commissioned portraits of other children.
