DETROIT, MICH.- Detroit’s Museum of New Art (MONA) announces that it will unleash DOCUMENTA USA this September 28th, boasting the participation of over 1,000 artists in the largest art exposition in the world with NYC’s renowned art critic Jerry Saltz present to talk us through it all.

After several years in the planning, the Museum of New Art (MONA) will open its latest state-of-the-art building with an exposition as avant‑garde in concept as the museum itself. The non‑profit, tax‑exempt MONA was established under the direction of Jef Bourgeau "to present and examine current art as a resource for and expression of the present culture that is creating it."

MONA's inaugural exhibition at its newest site (one of three in Michigan), titled DOCUMENTA USA, will incorporate the audience as an integral part of deciding contemporary art. The viewer is invited to explore and touch the materials used in the making of an exhibition ‑ to assume the role of curator and examine images by the world’s newest artists, and their biographies, catalogs and critical reviews.

"We believe that the museum visitor should not be held at arm's length from art, but be able to literally jump in and actually touch and handle the work," says curator Jessica Hopkins She adds that the exhibition will literally "refresh and renew itself every 100 minutes.”

DOCUMENTA USA creates an archive of all the materials used to decide an exhibition – slides, images, postcards, reviews, catalogs, art boxes, streaming computer stations to connect with galleries and artist sites, and more – all in the attempt to eliminate the curator as the middle-man and deliver art to the public straight-with-no-chaser.

As part of the museum’s mission, Paul Smith, Project Director, proposes “to void all previous museums and to prove them invalid.”

The exhibition reads like a wish list promising deliverance from the museum as a mere vault or repository, including the exhibition of artist materials that will completely renew itself every 100 minutes: a gallery filled with artist boxes that visitors can open, touch and peruse the contents, with work by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Arman, Peter Halley, Vito Acconci, Jenny Holzer and others; and an open invitation to any artist to hang one work on the museum wall until it is displaced by the work of another artist.

For a kick-starter on August 24th, the museum plans an auction of works by such artists as Uta Barth, Pae White, the Gao Brother alongside 100 others.
