LE MONT-SAINT-MICHEL (AFP).- The abbey of the Mont-Saint-Michel remained closed on Wednesday as the Tour de France arrived into town in peak tourist season, marking the third day of a strike at one of France's most popular attractions.
The thousand-year-old church, which attracts three million tourists a year to a stunning island setting off the Normandy coast, closed on Monday after a walkout by staff over the closure of a dedicated shuttle service.
Michele Le Barzic, an official from the CFDT union representing workers at the UNESCO world heritage site, said there was "a strong chance" the strike would continue.
A dispute over staff transport from the mainland to the island began 40 days ago, but the abbey has only been forced to shut completely since Monday.
Workers want a shuttle that dropped them at the foot of the abbey reinstated, rather than walk 400 metres (1,300 feet) from the drop-off point where the public service stops.
