NEW YORK, NY.- The American Art Fair celebrates its sixth year from December 2-5, 2013 at the landmarked Bohemian National Hall, 321 East 73rd Street in New York City. The gala preview on Sunday, December 1 marks the beginning of American Paintings week in New York. Inaugurated in 2008, The American Art Fair is the now the only one that focuses on American 19th and 20th century works and features hundreds of landscapes, portraits, still lifes, studies, and sculpture exhibited by 17 premier specialists.
Participants include Adelson Galleries, Alexander Gallery, Avery Galleries, Conner Rosenkranz, Debra Force Fine Art, Driscoll Babcock Galleries, Gerald Peters Gallery, Godel & Co. Fine Art, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, James Reinish & Associates, John H. Surovek Gallery, Jonathan Boos LLC, Menconi & Schoelkopf, Meredith Ward Fine Art, Questroyal Fine Art and Thomas Colville Fine Art. New in the Fair’s 6th edition is Tom Veilleux Gallery. Also new are the Fair’s branding and web site recently commissioned from the renowned Malcolm Grear Designers.
Portraits by Thomas Sully (Debra Force Fine Art), Gilbert Stuart and John Singleton Copley (Alexander Gallery), and landscapes by John William Casilear (Godel & Co.), Childe Hassam (Driscoll Babcock Galleries) and Irving Ramsey Wiles (Thomas Colville Fine Art) are among the 19th century paintings at this year’s Fair.
19th and 20th century sculpture includes Frederick MacMonnies’s 1890 bronze Diana (Gerald Peters Gallery), Robert Laurent’s 1920 The Bather (Tom Veilleux Gallery), and Hiram Powers’ 1848-9 Proserpine (Conner • Rosenkranz).
20th century paintings include Maurice Prendergast’s c. 1907 St. Malo (Adelson Galleries); Ralston Crawford’s 1936-9 Orange no. 2 (Avery Galleries) and his 1954 St. Ann Street (Menconi and Schoelkopf); William McGregor Paxton’s 1917 Reverie (John H. Surovek Gallery); and Joseph Stella’s 1926 Veiled Lady (Hirschl & Adler Galleries). Marsden Hartley’s 1918 Blue Mountain, New Mexico (James Reinish & Associates) and his 1936 Wild Rose (Questroyal Fine Art) are among the Hartleys in the Fair. Midcentury works include Jacob Lawrence’s 1946 gouache, The Lovers (Jonathan Boos), and John Marin’s Centerville, Maine (Meredith Ward Fine Art), also dated 1946.
Two special lectures will be presented at the Fair to coincide with American Paintings Week. On Monday December 2 at 4:00 pm, Marc Simpson, Independent Scholar will discuss Ferdinand Howald as a Collector of 20th Century American Works. On Tuesday, December 3 at 2:00 pm, Eleanor Jones Harvey, Senior Curator of American Paintings at the Smithsonian American Art Museum will present The Civil War and American Art: History Behind the Scenes.
