Städelschule Frankfurt announces Philippe Pirotte as new Director
From 2005 to 2011, Philippe Pirotte was Director of Kunsthalle Bern.



FRANKFURT.- After an intense search including a number of highly qualified local and international candidates, Städelschule announced that Philippe Pirotte will be appointed new director in April 2014.

Philippe Pirotte, born 1972, is a Belgian art historian, critic, and curator of numerous international exhibitions. He studied Art History at Ghent University. In 1999 he co-founded the art center objectif_exhibitions in Antwerp. From 2005 to 2011, he was Director of Kunsthalle Bern. Since 2004, Pirotte has held the position of Senior Advisor of the Rijksakademie for Visual Arts in Amsterdam. In July 2012, he became Adjunct Senior Curator at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Next to that he is currently advising program director for the Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing.

The Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main dates back to 1817 and is amongst the leading art academies worldwide, offering degrees in fine art, architecture and curatorial studies. Its acclaimed international teaching staff attracts a unique student body with over 60% of students from abroad. Furthermore, guest professors, external lecturers and visiting tutors make for a diverse range of teaching formats. Since 1987, the exhibition space Portikus has been an integral part of Städelschule's activities, adding to the school's teaching syllabus and international reputation. It has developed into a leading center for contemporary art in Germany and beyond, with a rich history that features more than 180 exhibitions to date.

Peter Fischli has been appointed a full-time Professor for Fine Art.
Monika Baer will be teaching as Professor in Painting for one year.
