2013 Guggenheim International Gala celebrates James Turrell and Christopher Wool

NEW YORK, NY.- On November 6 and 7, 2013, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum celebrated the 2013 Guggenheim International Gala honoring artists James Turrell, whose exhibition including the rotunda installation Aten Reign was featured at the museum from June 21 through September 25, 2013, and Christopher Wool, whose retrospective opened on October 25, 2013 and remains on view through January 22, 2014. Over $2.8 million was raised in support of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The 2013 Guggenheim International Gala was made possible by Dior.

The November 7 benefit dinner included Honorary Chairs Allison and Howard Lutnick, Raf Simons, Jennifer Blei Stockman, Sidney Toledano, and Co-Chairs Christina Baker, Virginie and Laurent Degryse, Phyllis Mack, Nancy Marks, Jacqueline and Mortimer Sackler, and Denise Saul. Other guests in attendance included Richard Armstrong, Maria Baibakova, Glenda Bailey, Robert Baker, Jessica Biel, Peter Brant, George Condo, Larry Gagosian, Austin Hearst and Gabriela Perezutti Hearst, Jeff and Justine Koons, Bill Mack, Peter Marino and Jane Trapnell, Marilyn Minter and Bill Miller, Shala Monroque, Gabriel Orozco and Maria Gutierrez, Mikhail Piotrovsky, Natalie Portman, Gaia Repossi and Jeremy Everett, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, Olympia Scarry and Neville Wakefield, Joel Shapiro, Cindy Sherman, Leelee Sobieski, Nancy Spector, Dan Stevens, Sarah Sze, Stella Tennant, Stefano Tonchi, James Turrell and Kyung Turrell, Willy Vanderperre and Olivier Rizzo, Christopher Wool and Charline von Heyl, and Lawrence Weiner, among others.

The Gala Benefit Auction through Paddle8 featured a sale of four artworks, by William Eggleston, On Kawara, François-Xavier Lalanne, and James Turrell, during the dinner event. Proceeds benefit the museum’s general operating fund, and help to make possible the Guggenheim’s innovative educational programs as well as the care, study, and exhibition of its unparalleled collections of modern and contemporary works of art.

On November 6, the 2013 Guggenheim International Gala Pre-Party, hosted by the Guggenheim’s Young Collectors Council and made possible by Dior, featured a special musical performance by electronic music ambassador / DJ Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman). The event included guests Noreen Ahmad, Harry Brant, Rachel Chandler, Michel Gaubert, Astrid Hill, Anne Huntington, Stephanie LaCava, Zosia Mamet, Pat McGrath, Shala Monroque, Elizabeth Olsen, James Purefoy, Zachary Quinto, Charlotte Sarkozy, Cobie Smulders, Max Snow, Daria Strokous, Victoria Stockman, Dan Tanzilli, and Harley Viera-Newton, Neville Wakefield.
