BUCHAREST (AFP).- Romania on Friday unveiled a collection of ancient gold coins plundered more than a decade ago from one of its UNESCO World Heritage sites and returned by Britain this year.

The 145 coins, minted in the first century BC in the Dacia civilisation that had its capital in western Romania, were symbols of Romanian ancestry, Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean told a Bucharest media conference.

"These coins are a testimony that we belong to a civilisation more than 2,000 years old," he said.

The coins were discovered in 2010 by British customs in the luggage of a Romanian citizen who was trying to reach Germany to sell them.

Tests by British Museum experts showed the coins were part of a Dacian treasure stolen from Sarmizsegetusa, the Dacian-era capital.

The Dacians, an Indo-European people conquered by the Romans in the first century AD, are considered one of the forebears of the Romanians.
