LOS ANGELES, CA.- After two days of spirited bidding, Bonhams Period Art & Design auction realized a sale total over $1.8 million on November 17 & 18.

Both days enjoyed a packed saleroom along with heavy telephone and online bidding vying for this broad selection of almost 1,600 lots. Numerous international bidders competed for unique items to round out their collections.

Leading the auction were the two Hermès crocodile Birkin handbags in vibrant blue and green with each sold for an impressive $68,750 on day two. An Hermès pink ostrich Birkin handbag achieved a strong price above its high estimate at $30,000. Strong prices were also realized for two Louis Vuitton monogram trunks from the early 20th century.

Outstanding results on day one of the auction came from a large private collection of finely carved chess sets in various mediums. These 20 lots sold for an astounding total of $153,750. Leading the furniture section, a pair of George III style inlaid satinwood tables achieved more than triple its pre-sale high estimate at $16,875.

Concluding the auction was an impressive selection of jewelry from prominent estates and collections. Highlights included a coral branch and 14k gold dragon brooch (sold for $4,750); a diamond and tourmaline bracelet (sold for $4,000); and a violet sapphire, ruby and diamond pendant (sold for $3,750).

Tim McNab, Los Angeles Director of Period Art & Design Auctions at Bonhams said of the sale, “Bonhams was delighted to offer collectors this opportunity to bid on property from numerous prominent collections and estates. Our November auction achieved strong results from bidders around the globe and we are looking forward to our next auction in February of 2014.”

Bonhams next Los Angeles Period Art & Design auction will be held on February 9 and 10, 2014.
