MIAMI, FL.- The artists in this show can be defined beyond national borders as global, and are as distinct and varied in their approach to their art and use of media, as the conceptual framework they present. Yet their work is linked by a common theme in the exhibition: the departure from multiple Caribbean cartographies; a borderless territory, shaped the histories of conflicting powers from migratory flows of people in and out from all over the world, hybridity and its complex role in shaping individual and cultural identity.

Global Caribbean V is the most significant art exhibition devoted to Caribbean contemporary art during Art Basel week. It concentrates the best of artists, curators and specialists related to Caribbean culture. Providing a window into the creative experience of the region to large audiences, youth, and students and to the diverse and extended Caribbean Diaspora in South Florida. This sustained effort by artists and cultural promoter Edouard Duval Carrie is on its fifth exhibition edition, concerning expansive ways of looking at peripheral and Caribbean art identity taking place at the Little Haiti cultural Center state-of-the-art gallery and Miami’s premium alternative space for contemporary art in a community context. The exhibition runs through January 26, 2014.

On January 16th and 17th , 2014, Global Caribbean V Symposia [Perceptive Expeditions] is proposed to bring issues and questions with a desire to spin the boundary that presently sets the regulations of what is assumed of importance or value in art & culture, concerning peripheral and adjacent neighborhoods of thought and production such as the Caribbean, in the face of borderless accelerated social and economic relations that currently determines the conditions in which art production and culture are allowed to unravel and interact.

Global Caribbean V will unfold through a program of exhibitions and projects leading to a rediscovery of Miami through the vision and art of a unique selection of artists that emerged from the Caribbean.

The selected art works were created by artists from culturally, socioeconomically, politically, and geographically diverse backgrounds. The artists in this show are as distinct and varied in their approach to their art and use of media as the conceptual framework they present. Yet their work is linked by a common theme in the exhibition: the Caribbean cartographies as a site of power and its complex role in shaping individual and cultural identity.
