NEW YORK, NY.- Defying definitions of genre, internationally-acclaimed artist Doug Aitken has explored every medium, from architecture and film to installations and interventions. This beautifully designed volume features visual essays that survey Aiken’s work in all mediums. This book differs significantly from a traditional artist’s monograph in that its unusual construction does not tell a linear narrative but instead reflects the spirit of Doug Aitken’s complex and multilayered work.

The four visual essays – “Experience in the Expanded Field” by Bice Curiger; “Out of Time” by Kerry Brougher; “Myths of Sprawl” by Aaron Betsky; and “When the Future is Now” by Tim Griffin – were created to capture the narrative style Aitken is known for and address subjects that have preoccupied the artist for over twenty years. There are no captions on the pages of these visual essays; they act as companion pieces to the book’s texts, addressing the same subjects the writers do. However, captions for the works in the visual essays can be found at the back of each chapter. Every work in the book is documented by page number in the complete list of works beginning on page 280. The book concludes with interviews with the artist conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist.
