NEW YORK, NY.- Defying definitions of genre, internationally-acclaimed artist Doug Aitken has explored every medium, from architecture and film to installations and interventions. While Aitkens work varies in theme and context, his installations share a common thread in their ability to use technology to evoke meaningful personal reactions from the viewer, encourage audience interaction, and inspire communal gatherings. His films often explore themes of displacement and temporality, and through his keen awareness of motion, sound, and color he creates dreamlike landscapes and the futurist aesthetic for which he has become known. He has collaborated with designers, artists, musicians, and actors such as Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Beck, Mike Kelly, David Adjay and his art projects have been exhibited in museums around the world from The Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art to The Tate, Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Hirshorn Museum.
DOUG AITKEN 100 YRS is the comprehensive book on this innovative artist whose large-scale public art projects have made him an art star. This beautifully designed volume features visual essays that survey Aikens work in all mediums. This book differs significantly from a traditional artists monograph in that its unusual construction does not tell a linear narrative but instead reflects the spirit of Doug Aitkens complex and multilayered work.
The four visual essays Experience in the Expanded Field by Bice Curiger; Out of Time by Kerry Brougher; Myths of Sprawl by Aaron Betsky; and When the Future is Now by Tim Griffin were created to capture the narrative style Aitken is known for and address subjects that have preoccupied the artist for over twenty years. There are no captions on the pages of these visual essays; they act as companion pieces to the books texts, addressing the same subjects the writers do. However, captions for the works in the visual essays can be found at the back of each chapter. Every work in the book is documented by page number in the complete list of works beginning on page 280. The book concludes with interviews with the artist conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist.
