BELLEVUE, WA.- Traveling from ASU Art Museum and Ceramic Research Center, Crafting a Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft features over 60 examples of exemplary work in wood, ceramic, and fiber by emerging and established artists who are the driving force behind rethinking the craft field.

These influential artists include:

Peter Voulkos: The winner of numerous prestigious awards and the founder and chair of two significant college ceramic departments, Voulkos made a lasting impact on the field of ceramics over his 50-year career.

Ed Moulthrop: Widely known as the “father of modern woodturning,” Moulthrop designed and built his own equipment in order to create unprecedentedly large pieces. His work is featured in several prominent museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Dorothy Gill Barnes: Presented with the lifetime achievement award in 1993 by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC., Gill Barnes has been considered one of the most influential makers within the basket field in recent years.

Sonya Clark: Chair of the Department of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and the recipient of several honors, Clark creates textile works with unconventional materials to address the issues of race and identity in her work.

Alison Elizabeth Taylor: Creating stunning and socially conscious works with the traditional craft of marquetry, Taylor has been recognized in recent years as an exciting new force in the craft field.

As a regional center of art, craft, and design, Bellevue Arts Museum was selected as the ideal host for this traveling exhibition, scheduled to arrive in Bellevue at the end of January. While craft is a fundamental element of many of the Museum’s exhibitions, BAM is thrilled to have this opportunity to engage with craft so directly, inviting the community to explore its definition, its past, its present, and to look forward into the future of the field. In its entirety, the exhibition showcases a wide array of techniques and concepts about making, supplying audiences with an updated understanding of contemporary craft.

Crafting a Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft is organized by the Arizona State University Art Museum and Ceramics Research Center, Tempe, Arizona, and curated by Associate Director and Senior Curator Heather Sealy Lineberry and Curator of Ceramics Peter Held with assistance from Windgate Curatorial Fellow Elizabeth Kozlowski. The local presentation of this exhibition is curated by Nora Atkinson.
