SAN DIEGO, CA.- The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego presents XTO + J-C: Christo and Jeanne-Claude Featuring Works from the Bequest of David C. Copley at the Museum’s La Jolla location from February 2 through April 6, 2014.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude—X-TO and J-C—are best known for the monumental projects they have accomplished over four decades and across diverse geographies. Such works have compelled viewers with their startling scale and presence and engaged the public in debate. While Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s works are temporary, they involve years of complicated negotiations, revealing hidden societal and bureaucratic mechanisms much as they also highlight the physical world around us.

X-TO + J-C will feature more than fifty works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, including pieces such as Christo’s evocative Package (1960), alongside drawings related to his early concealed objects: chairs, road signs, and other commonplace items. Store Front (1965-66) and a related series of Show Windows from the early 70s signal an expansion of the artist’s sculptural practice to a new environmental realm. Christo’s preparatory drawings and collages, which combine exquisite draftsmanship with technical data, maps, and photographs, are masterful evocations of the numerous projects Jeanne-Claude and he conceived and executed.

X-TO + J-C will honor the late David Copley (1952-2012). Copley was one of MCASD’s most passionate patrons and generous Trustees. He was also the most prolific collector of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work in the United States. This exhibition presents works which came to the Museum through David Copley’s bequest or were given in his honor, including significant donations from Christo himself and from the David C. Copley Foundation. MCASD is honored to celebrate David Copley’s life and his great commitment to this enduring body of work.
