The Light is the Source of the Land, 2014.

PROVO, UT.- Brigham Young University’s Museum of Art presents the first solo exhibition of works by emerging artist, Sarah O Donnell. On view in the museum’s Electronic Gallery, this show features two light based installations that use projected imagery to immerse viewers in fictional spaces.

“No Ghost” is a video loop of an open doorway, occasionally slamming shut. Filmed from the interior of an anonymous building, the door looks out onto the street of a Montana ghost town. Projected life size on the gallery wall, viewers stand before the open doorway which could easily be mistaken for a still image. The sound of the hinges squeak and the door slams shut, darkening the image and making the projection nearly invisible, except for the light leaking through the keyholes. “No Ghost” tests the tension between the still and moving image, while simultaneously framing the main street of a quiet ghost town through the doorway of its crumbling architecture.

Sarah O Donnell earned her MFA in Sculpture from the Ohio State University, where she was a recipient of a prestigious University Fellowship. Upon graduating, she attended the Vermont Studio Center on a David Bermant Foundation Fellowship. Sarah is currently an artist in residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, in Omaha, NE.

O Donnell’s artwork uses a range of media including video, photography, installation and projected imagery to explore themes of place, memory, narrative, and the sometimes fine line between fiction and reality.

“The Light is the Source of the Land” is on view until August 9, 2014.
