NEW YORK, NY.- Two works tied for the top lot spot of the May 13 Contemporary Art auction at Bonhams. German-American artist Hans Hofmann's "The Rabbitt," a 1945 oil painting on plywood panel, and Venezuelan artist Jesús Rafael Soto's "Petit Canada," a 1975 acrylic work on wood with painted metal and nylon string, each achieved $185,000.

The 130-lot auction was well attended at Bonhams' New York saleroom with participants from 23 countries bidding online, over the phones and in person.

Interest was high in sculpture and multi-dimensional works of the sale, such as Olga de Amaral’s “Triptico en Oro,” a 1992, glittering tribute to the traditional arrangement that sold for $173,000. The trailblazing Columbian textile artist, best known for her use of gold, was one of many important Latin American artists who were represented in the auction. Another was Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo whose “Personaje en negro,” a 1971 work in oil and sand on canvas, brought $106,250.

An additional artist whose work generated much interest in the auction was Mathias Goeritz. Two of the German-born, Mexican artist’s works surpassed their pre-sale estimates and sold among the top lots of the sale. "Anaconda Mockup," a 1978 work in perforated sheet metal on painted wood, brought $125,000 (est. $40,000-60,000), while an untitled work in gold leaf on panel sold for $118,750 (est. $50,000-70,000).

Works by American artists Alexander Calder, Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, as well as English sculptor Sir Anthony Caro O.M., also brought strong results.

According to Jeremy Goldsmith, Director of the Americas for Contemporary Art at Bonhams, "This afternoon's sale of Contemporary Art at Bonhams saw spirited bidding from across the globe. We are particularly pleased with the results achieved for both modern and contemporary Latin American artists, with strong results realized for Matthias Goeritz's gold paintings and a new world record achieved for Olga de Amaral's ‘Triptico en Oro.’ We look forward to our July 2 sale of Contemporary Art in London and our November sale in New York."
