EDINBURGH.- A painting by Scottish Colourist Samuel John Peploe sold for £391,250 at Lyon & Turnbull last week. The painting titled “Still Life With Oranges” was exhibited in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1985. The sale made a total of £1,359,549.

Other items of interest in the sale were a sculpture “Eastre, Hymn to the Sun”, valued at £12,000-18,000, by another Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson, which lay under his bed for three years before he could afford to have it cast. It sold for £49,250.

The sculpture is part of a unique collection of works of art by Fergusson from private Scottish Collections in the sale, they come to sale at the same time as a major exhibition of his works ‘Scottish Colourist Series: J. D. Fergusson Exhibition’ continues at the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh until the 15th June 2014.

Two other bronze sculptures by Fergusson titled “Effulgence” which for £10,625 and “Torse de Femme” which sold for £3,000.

Nick Curnow Managing Director and Paintings Specialist said “Our sale of Scottish paintings demonstrates that the Scottish market is still buoyant, we had bidders from across the UK, the USA and Europe bidding on the phones and internet. Scottish Colourist remain as popular as ever and we had some fine examples of their works in our sale.”

Fergusson paintings included “At the Dinner Table” which sold for £22,500 and a significant portrait by Fergusson tiled “Mademoiselle Cassavetes”, painted in 1938, sold for £49,250, double its estimate.

Other Scottish Colourists paintings also sold including paintings by Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, titled “Iona North End and Ben More” selling for £66,050 and a George Leslie Hunter “Still Life with Fruit and Flowers” selling for £73,250.
