AUGUSTA, GA.- Art from the Collection of Jonathan Greenand Richard Weedman, an exhibition of forty paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by Caribbean, Latin American, and American artists, opened on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Morris Museum of Art. The exhibition remains on display through September 28, 2014.

“Over the past thirty-five years, acclaimed artist Jonathan Green and his partner and studio director, Richard Weedman, have amassed an astonishing art collection,”said Kevin Grogan, direct of the Morris Museum of Art. “These works reflect the breadth of their interests, the cultural diversity that has contributed so vitally to the development of American art, and the themes of work, love, belonging, and spirituality. More than forty works of art were selected from their collection of more than thirteen hundred objects for this exhibition.”

People throughout the country are familiar with Jonathan Green’s art. Represented in the Morris Museum’s permanent collection by twenty-two paintings, Green is beloved by many for his vibrant depictions of Gullah life in the lowcountry. Few people, however, are familiar with the extraordinary collection that he and Richard Weedman have patiently and lovingly assembled over the years.

The core of the collection focuses on works of art created under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s and 1940s, but it goes well beyond the WPA, encompassing works that represent a wide variety of styles, cultures, and sensibilities. The collection includes the work of such well-known artists as William H. Johnson, Sam Gilliam, Elizabeth Catlett, and David Driskell.
