LONDON.- The Pump House Gallery presents Faisal AbduAllah: A Participatory Project featuring Faisal AbduAllah and current and past members of the Katherine Low Settlement in Battersea. The works produced as part of this project are displayed alongside photographs by American photographer Linda Hackett.
This year, the Katherine Low Settlement celebrates its 90th anniversary as Batterseas long-standing multipurpose community and social action centre. The exhibition presents works exploring the relationship between people and place and the personal and the collective. By exploring the history of the Katherine Low Settlement through the memories of current and past members, the project seeks to reveal new narratives within the diverse social make-up of the area.
Through a series of workshops at the Katherine Low Settlement centre, AbduAllah works with the members to open up dialogue about the past experiences of both the area and the centre, giving voice to otherwise silent histories. Touching on themes of identity, place, perception and memory, AbduAllah utilises thinking, making and dissemination to encourage participants to embrace uncertainty and think critically about their place in society.
The ideas and experiments in these workshops form the basis of the photographic works produced by AbduAllah in his studio. Alongside these works are a series of portrait photographs by Linda Hackett taken from the American Museum in Britain, Bath, consisting of unknown subjects identified only by their surroundings.
Pump House Gallery will host free family workshops every Sunday from 12noon-4pm throughout the exhibition (26 June 3 August). These workshops are open to all and have various themes.
The exhibition is a touring exhibition presented by the Pump House Gallery in collaboration with the Katherine Low Settlement.
