NEW YORK, NY.- Y Gallery presents WHAT GOES THERE? an exhibition curated by Carlos Garcia Montero including works by Alejandro Almanza Pereda, Shay Arick and Bryan Zanisnik.

How can we challenge the pure idealist space of domain? Site-specific art is artwork created to exist in a certain place with the ambition of being pure, and detached from certain demands that can avoid reality. Adding location as part of the work presumes to acknowledge certain consciousness of the environment that beforehand was avoided or discontinued. This exhibition investigates different strategies for subverting the general character of what we call site specific-art. Is it possible to create a mental landscape from the experiences generated in life? Or is it possible to defy reason and inhabit more than one space at a time? Which forms of transgression call out establishment and denounce its general character in favor of a more profound reality? Three artists through humor, repetition, chance and improvisation will experiment with the possibilities of what the art object can be.

Alejandro Almanza Pereda (b. 1977, Mexico City, Mexico) lives and works between New York City and Mexico City, Mexico. He earned a BFA from University of Texas at El Paso (2005), and has attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2004), and is an MFA candidate at Hunter College of The City University of New York (2015). He has also been a resident at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha (2011). His awards and honors include grants from the Harpo Foundation (2010), Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (2008), and the National Fund for the Arts and Culture (FONCA) Programa Jovenes Creadores Mexico City (2005, 2007). Some recent exhibitions include shows at Arizona State University Art Museum, Phoenix (2013); Las Quince Letras, Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City (2013); El Diente Dorado del Caballo Regalado, Revolver Gallery, Lima (2013); Fruto de una Infinidad de Circunstancias Imposibles de Determinar, González y González, Santiago de Chile (2013); Bienal de Curitiba, Brazil (2011); Dublin Contemporary, Ireland (2011) among others.

Shay Arick (b. 1979, Kfar-Saba, Israel) lives and works in New York and Tel Aviv. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts with honors at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem in 2011, where he received the Eileen Cooper Award for Creativity and the America-Israel Award for Excellence in Sculpture. While at Bezalel Academy, he was selected for the Exchange Program for Merit Students to study at the School of Visual Art in New York City. Arick also holds a MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. His awards include the Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Arts Award, and grants from The San Francisco Foundation and the International Sculpture Center. Some recent exhibitions include SA Beauty Salon, Y Gallery, New York (2014); Forge, ZIZ Space, Tel-Aviv (2014); Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards, SOMARTS Gallery, San Francisco (2013); Point of No Return, Southern Exposure, San Francisco (2012) among others.

Bryan Zanisnik (b. 1979, Union, New Jersey) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He holds a BA from Drew University and in 2009 received his MFA from Hunter College. In 2008, he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has been a resident at RAIR Philly/ICA, Philadelphia (2014), Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program, Brooklyn (2013), Guangdong Times Museum, Guangzhou (2011), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Program (2011), among others. His awards and honors include grants from Franklin Furnace Fund (2011), Foundation for Contemporary Arts (2011) and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation (2007). Zanisnik’s work has been reviewed in Art21, Bomb Magazine, The New York Times, Triple Canopy, Art in America, Artforum.com, ARTnews, Time Out New York, New York Magazine, Paper Magazine, and Tema Celeste, among others.
