BUFFALO, NY.- Buffalo and the
Albright-Knox Art Gallery are known throughout the international art world as home to one of the worlds most important collections of modern and contemporary art. From 2014 to 2015, the museum is proud to present a national tour of more than seventy masterworks from this extraordinary Collection. This exhibitionwhich includes paintings by Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warholreceived overwhelming critical acclaim when it opened in Denver earlier this year. Sincerely Yours: Treasures of the Queen City opens in Buffalo on July 5. A major free public opening event will take place from 4 to 7 pm that day, featuring food trucks and live music, and all are welcome to attend.
Buffalo is the second stop on the national tour, and the return of this selection of masterworks will give Western New Yorkers the opportunity to see the Treasures of the Queen City with fresh eyes. Adding to the visitor experience at the AK this summer, guests will be able to enter and exit the museum via its Elmwood Avenue portico, and enjoy light refreshments outside the museum served by AK Café.
The Albright-Knox expects that many tourists from outside the area will visit Buffalo this summer to see the exhibition, and has partnered with Delaware North Companies, New York State Parks Department, Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation, and Visit Buffalo Niagara to promote the exhibition among visitors to our region.
The paintings and sculptures in Sincerely Yours tell the captivating story of twentieth-century art and highlight dramatic innovations in contemporary art. When the exhibition closes in Buffalo, it will travel to the San Diego Museum of Art (October 4, 2014January 27, 2015), Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (February 19June 1, 2015), and the Milwaukee Art Museum (June 26September 14, 2015). Before these famous artworks delight museumgoers around the country, the Albright-Knox welcomes the community to visit this extraordinary exhibition of masterpieces that are sincerely ours here in Buffalo.
I want to invite the entire community to visit the AK this summer, and to be proud of the museum and its Collection, which is essentially an American national treasure, if not a global one, said Albright-Knox Deputy Director Joe Lin-Hill. I think we forget how extraordinary this is, and the accolades the AKs Collection received when it was in Denver remind us that we should be very proud of what we have here.
Sincerely Yours: Treasures of the Queen City is organized by Chief Curator Emeritus Douglas Dreishpoon and Curator Cathleen Chaffee. It will remain on view until September 14, 2014.
