NEW ORLEANS, LA.- Mónica Ramírez-Montagut has been named the new executive director of Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University.

Ramírez-Montagut, former associate director and senior curator for MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana in San Jose, California, was appointed director following a national search led by Associate Provost Ana López.

Ramírez-Montagut brings to Newcomb Art Gallery more than 15 years in the world of contemporary art, architecture and design. In addition to her work at MACLA, a contemporary arts space grounded in the Latino experience, she has served as curator at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut, assistant curator of architecture and design at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, curator of collections and public programs at the Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and director of community outreach at the Queens Theatre in the Park in New York City.

Ramírez-Montagut said she was attracted to the Newcomb Art Gallery position because of its “great potential to contribute to the community and the national art world.

“I also believe a university is the perfect context to explore interdisciplinary projects given the wide range of expertise in different fields that ultimately intersect with life and art,” she said.

As executive director, she said wants the gallery to serve and reflect Tulane as well as the community at large. “I would like to see the gallery become a vital and dynamic gathering center for students and the community and I envision implementing community outreach and public engagement strategies and activities.”

Ramírez-Montagut received her bachelor’s degree in architecture from the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and her master’s and doctorate in architecture from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona. She replaces interim Executive Director Jeremy Jernegan, associate professor of art.
