DALLAS, TX.- Erin Cluley Gallery will open with an inaugural exhibition on Saturday September 13, 2014 in Trinity Groves at 414 Fabrication Street. The 2000 square foot space is the first commercial gallery focused solely on contemporary visual art to open in the Trinity Groves development at the foot of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in West Dallas.
Erin Cluley Gallery is a contemporary art gallery representing emerging and mid-career artists from Dallas and the United States. The gallery will present a provocative program of artists working in both traditional and alternative forms including painting, sculpture, new media, photography, sculptural installation and public intervention.
In conjunction with mounting exhibitions inside the gallery space, Erin Cluley Gallery will maintain a focus on presenting public projects conceptualized by its artists. Negotiating projects on the artists’ behalf, the gallery will make this an ongoing component of the exhibition program and an impactful contribution to public art intervention in Dallas.
Erin Cluley Gallery will open with an exhibition by Baltimore-based artist René Treviño. Upcoming exhibitions and projects for the 2014-2015 season will include Jimmy Joe Roche (Baltimore MD), Kevin Todora (Dallas TX), Josephine Durkin (Greenville TX), Francisco Moreno (Dallas TX), Hidenori Ishii (Brooklyn NY).
For the gallery’s inaugural exhibition RENÉ TREVIÑO: Estrellas, Baltimore-based artist René Treviño will activate the space with his bold paintings and installation work. Using Aztec calendars, ancient Mexican imagery and iconic re-interpretations of patriotic symbols, Treviño’s artwork addresses a personal quest for heroism, bravery and a need to define a place in the world.
In a statement from the artist, Treviño says, “I challenge traditional ideas of race and sexual orientation but at the same time am compelled to make thoughtful and beautiful work. Through my practice, I confront societal assumptions and give new insight into human experience.”
Embracing his native Texas roots, Treviño has produced a series of Texan and American flags to be incorporated into his exhibition in Dallas. The Rainbow American/Texan Flag project relates to patriotism and Treviño’s identity as a gay Mexican-American. By reclaiming and shifting the symbols and colors of the flags, a new icon is born which more fully represents the experience of underrepresented communities.
About René Treviño René Treviño was born in Kingsville, Texas. He received his BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in 2003 and his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2005.
He has shown at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, CT; the Baltimore Museum of Art, Goliath Visual Space in Brooklyn, NY; White Box in New York; the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art; the Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, VA; the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore, MD; and Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. He was also included in the 2007 WPA/Corcoran OPTIONS Biennial in Washington DC and was awarded a 2009 Baltimore Creative Fund Individual Artist Grant and won the 2009 Trawick Prize.
He was an artist-in-residence at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA and the Creative Alliance in Baltimore, MD and has been invited to participate in the AIR Serenbe program in Serenbe, GA in 2015.
His work has been featured in Art Papers, New American Painters, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore City Paper, Philadelphia Enquirer, Washington Blade, Washington Post as well as several online publications.
Treviño currently resides in Baltimore, MD.
