HONG KONG.- Sotheby’s Hong Kong announced today the appointment of Katherine Don as Head of Contemporary Ink, Sotheby’s Hong Kong.

Regarding Katherine Don’s appointment, Kevin Ching, Chief Executive Officer, Sotheby’s Asia, said, “I am pleased to have Katherine joining Sotheby’s Hong Kong to take the reins of our newly set-up Contemporary Ink Department. She will be responsible for organising the bi-annual Contemporary Ink auctions and selling exhibitions in Hong Kong.

Katherine makes a significant addition to our team. With her strong background and expertise in contemporary art, she will direct development and content curation of our Contemporary Ink Art offerings in Hong Kong and Asia with invaluable aesthetic, academic and market insights.”

The Contemporary Ink Department category forms an integral part of Sotheby’s Hong Kong’s bi-annual auctions, and the next dedicated sale – Contemporary Literati: Landscapes In Mind will be held on 6 October during its Autumn Sales 2014.

Contemporary ink art receives tremendous interest from collectors and critics. Sotheby’s Hong Kong’s first dedicated sale for contemporary ink art, Contemporary Literati: Early Ink Masters held in October last year greatly exceeded expectations, with a grand total that nearly quadrupled its pre-sale estimate. In April 2014, Sotheby’s second dedicated sale, Contemporary Literati: A Gathering also sold well in excess of its estimate. The two consecutive wins proved contemporary ink art’s strong and consistent appeal to art lovers and collectors alike.

On assuming her new role, Katherine will be based in Hong Kong and work closely with the Sotheby’s Hong Kong team to offer the best in contemporary ink art to art lovers and collectors in Hong Kong and Asia.

Katherine Don joined Sotheby’s in August 2014 as the Department Head of Contemporary Ink in Asia. She is responsible for organising the bi-annual Contemporary Ink auctions and selling exhibitions in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining Sotheby’s Hong Kong, Katherine was an art advisor specialising in contemporary Chinese art. From 2013 to 2014, she was a key contributor to Sotheby’s Chinese Contemporary Ink sales in New York and Hong Kong as a consultant.

For nine years, Katherine established and directed RedBox Studio Ltd, an art advisory firm for private collectors of contemporary Chinese art. Her curatorial activities in Beijing, New York, Canada, and Spain had a consistent focus on works on paper, including contemporary Chinese ink painting. Prior to 2005, she worked at several New York art galleries, including Goedhuis Contemporary where she served as Director for two years.

Katherine holds a dual-degree in Art History and East Asian Studies from Barnard College, Columbia University, and received a Masters degree from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
