OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA.- Marfa Contemporary celebrates the opening of the Ulysses exhibition by New York-based artist Spencer Finch on Friday, October 10, 2014. The exhibition will remain open through January 4, 2015. The exhibition has been curated by Melissa Ho.
Spencer Finch is a world-renowned artist whose most recent work, Trying To Remember the Color of the Sky on That September Morning was commissioned by the National September 11 Memorial Museum. Finch is best known for ethereal light installations that reflect his experience of natural phenomena. He is a student of the nature of light, color, memory and perception; this study of light is reflected in his watercolors, drawings, video and photographs, as well as large-scale installations.
For Marfa Contemporary, Finch will make a single, monumental work which will comprise over 1,000 Pantone chips. Entitled Ulysses, the installation will reflect one complete day of color sensations observed by Finch in Brooklyn, NY. The installation will be divided into 18 sections with each section exploring a specific idea of color theory.
Spencer Finch was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1962 and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has a BA in comparative literature from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York (1985) and an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design (1989). Solo exhibitions include Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana (2013), the Art Institute of Chicago (2011), Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams (2007) and Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (2003). He participated in the Folkestone Triennial, UK (2011) and the 53rd Venice Biennale (2009).
