SINGAPORE.- Art Plural Gallery is presenting the solo exhibition of American artist Jedd Novatt. Featuring two large sculptures as well as smaller scale works and collages, the exhibition runs from 4, November to 4, December, 2014 on the fourth floor of the gallery.

Born in New York City in 1958, Jedd Novatt was educated both in the United States and France, where he currently lives. Breaking new grounds, his sculptures push boundaries and challenge our expectations by creating a unique aesthetic that unveils an unprecedented path in the history of sculpture. Defying scale and questioning gravity, sculptures of all sizes shape interspaces, define dimensions and embody monumentality. Novatt's works incise the air with their unequal edges creating two dialectic spaces. “The form I focus on most is the inverse (negative space) of the material of the work: the space that surrounds it, which I imagine as solid”, the artist says.

Jedd Novatt draws lines and borders, sculpting a space more than a material. Mostly using stainless steel and bronze, he confronts himself with the unmalleability and the restrictions of raw material. These limits set the physical frames of the sculptures, constantly on the verge of collapsing. The strength, purity and primitiveness of the material are relentlessly conflicting with the continuous state of imbalance. Relating to the moment before collapse, the sculpture is fixed in motion. These inherent structural tensions resonate in the viewer. Beset by metaphysical questionings, he is able to accept the disequilibrium as if it was the right order of things.

The architectonic of the sculpture embodies invisible compositions and intangible imbrications of memories. Multiple narrations can be told. However, each material translates substantial values; bronze conveys beauty and subtlety as well as power. The organic evolution of the material, especially when placed outdoors, counts the cycles and fluxes, denying permanence and placing Jedd Novatt’s work in an ongoing quest for essential forms and balances.

“The Greeks defined chaos as the nothingness out of which the first objects of existence appeared - sky, earth and the sea. A space lacking in orientation and order, yet out of which emerges all that makes up our collective experience with scale and finally form", states Jedd Novatt. Indeed, these matrixes untitled Chaos echo the very origin, remote times where the matter would sculpt the living and, from chaos, build order. Jedd Novatt’s empty space is full with meaning: it stands for the actual creator of the form.

American artist Jedd Novatt is a sculptor of international renown. Novatt plays with gravity, weight and balance. Monumental sculptures pave international indoor and outdoor sites daringly entering in relation with space. Novatt seizes the raw qualities of materials, such as steel or bronze, to magnify their own notions of purity, power, permanence or stoicism. Instability and irregularity engagingly give rhythm to the cubic matrixes liberated from geometry as the latter is deconstructed, dislocated and emptied. The complexity of the structure defying physics and human apprehension sets new hypothesis in the history of abstract sculpture placing doubt in the centre of the artistic quest.

Born in New York in 1958, Jedd Novatt graduated from Lacoste School of the Arts in France and from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. The artist lives in Paris and divides his time among studios in Paris, Normandy, and the Basque region in Spain.
