LONDON.- Any Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Berlinetta by Touring is a thing of beauty and a highly coveted pre-war car but when such an automobile also boasts a truly fascinating history tied to one the most significant moments in 20th century history, it becomes very special indeed.
It is well documented that Italys notorious war-time dictator, Benito Mussolini, enjoyed many of the finest things in life; so when he sought to gift a car to his lover, Claretta Petacci, he was naturally drawn to the stunning lines and effortless performance of an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Sport Berlinetta. Chassis no. 915033 rolled off the production line in 1939 with stunning coachwork by Touring, and passed into the custody of Ms. Petacci for her exclusive use during the war years, chauffeur-driven by Franz Spögler, who confirmed the vehicles identity and its war-time use many years after the conclusion of hostilities. It is also understood from Spöglers documented recollections that this was the very car that Petacci and other members of her family drove in convoy from Milan in a bid to find refuge across the Italian border in 1945, only to be stopped by partisans close to Lake Como. Her fate after capture, along with that of Mussolini, is well known, and it is remarkable to think that her last journey took place in this incredible Alfa Romeo.
915033 has since enjoyed an amazing and well acknowledged history, having been acquired by a US army officer after the war and shipped directly to the United States. Originally re-discovered in 1970 on a farm in New York State, it has been fully and faithfully restored in recent years by world-renowned marque expert, Francesco Bonfanti, and honoured with Best in Class at the Concorso dEleganza Villa dEste in 2007 and Best of Show at the 2011 Salon Privé Concours dElegance amongst others. (Estimate: 1.900.000-2.400.000).
Few cars that have passed through our hands have had quite the important historical context that this Alfa Romeo can boast, says Augustin Sabatié-Garat, Car Specialist, RM Auctions Europe. It played a role in one of the most important moments of the Second World War, and is a fascinating footnote in 20th century history. That it is also one of the most desirable of all pre-war Grand Touring cars and beautifully restored by the worlds leading marque expert, makes it an unbelievable prize for any serious collector.
For those wishing to trade exotic Italian style for outstanding German efficiency, RMs Paris sale also features two highly collectible early Porsche 911 models; a 1969 Porsche 911 S Factory Rally, and a legendary 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Sports Lightweight.
The 2.0 litre ex-works rally car, chassis no.119300932, left the production line in March 1969 in bright Blood Orange paintwork before despatch to the Porsche race department. There, the motorsports division fitted a much-uprated 170-bhp engine along with a number of other significant upgrades. For the 1969 rally season, Porsche built six factory rally cars to contest the Monte Carlo Rally, Rally Neige et Glace, Tour de Corse and the Acropolis Rally, a strategy which led to many significant successes. The example on offer was the car entered into the Acropolis Rally, and secured a famous victory in the hands Pauli Toivonen/Martti Colari, finishing 1 minute 32 seconds ahead of the second placed car.
It was then sold to French race and rally driver Jean Claude Lagniez and contested the 1969 Tour De France, the 1000 KM Paris, the Rally Jeanne d´Arc, the Rally Tour de Corse and the Rally Criterium des Cevennes, as well as finishing the 1970 24 Heures du Mans in the hands of Mauroy and Mazzia. The cars ownership passed on in 1970 but the car continued to compete, starting both the 1971 and 1972 24 Heures du Mans and the 1971 Tour de France. Offered in concours condition, resplendent in its original Acropolis Rally, Blood orange livery, it is surely an important car in Porsches illustrious racing history (Estimate: 1.100.000-1.300.000).
Complementing the ex-Works car is another highly desirable early 911 a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Sports Lightweight. These special FIA homologation 911s were limited to 500 examples, and chassis no. 9113600619 left the factory in early 1973 boasting 210 bhp and weighing only 1075 kgs. Remarkably, the example on offer is just two owners from new, having spent 1973-2011 in the hands of its first owner in Italy, before being sold to its second and current owner in France. Offered in perfect, restored condition, it is estimated at 1.000.000-1.400.000.
