LOS ANGELES, CA.- A rare 13th century Russian Icon will be available at Los Angeles Jewelry Antiques & Design from January 15-18, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This fully documented and authenticated piece is being offered by Icons & Antiques Gallery for $1.75 million dollars. The majority of Russian Icons are in museum collections. This piece, one of the rarest icons in the world, is on the market for the first time in 15 years.

Russian icons trace their roots back to 988 when the pagan Rus' were converted to Christianity. For more than one thousand years Orthodox Christianity was the foundation of Russian society, and the basis of religious art.

The Double Sided Russian Icon depicting Christ and St. George was created in the Byzantine tradition. This processional icon is believed to have been carried in church processions and possibly into battle. The icon depicts Christ Almighty or The Almighty Savior on one side. The opposite side contains an image of St. George conquering the dragon. St. George is the patron saint of Russia, and is commonly used on religious processional pieces.

The Double Sided Russian Icon originated in the Vladimir region of Russia between 1220-1230AD. It has sustained restorations through time, but is thought to be primarily in original condition.

Los Angeles Jewelry Antiques & Design takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, in tandem with the LA Art Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center South Hall J & K 1201 South Figueroa Street Los Angeles, CA 90015. It is open to the public from January 15-18, with an opening night benefit on Wednesday, January 14, 2015.
