HAMILTON.- The Art Gallery of Hamilton is presenting Painting Hamilton, an exhibition featuring 10 artists from the Greater Hamilton area, showcasing the diverse subject matter, techniques and materials that are of the moment in contemporary painting practices.
Direct from the artists studios and local private collections, the exhibition includes over 40 works in landscape, portraiture and abstraction. From lush oil paintings to a sculptural installation, the range of media, form and scale is intriguing, demonstrating that local painters are using traditional methods and concepts in innovative and specialized ways.
Hamilton has a very rich artists scene, and a great number of brilliant painters, said Louise Dompierre, AGH President and CEO. The Art Gallery of Hamilton is thrilled to share the incredible work of contemporary painters in the Greater Hamilton area with the 250,000+ visitors to the AGH. The AGH constantly strives to create opportunities for local artists. We hope that over time Painting Hamilton will be the first of a series of exhibitions where we look at other media, for example sculpture, in a focused way.
Painting Hamilton includes works by long time Hamilton-area artists Catherine Gibbon, Christina Sealey, Lorne Toews and Matthew Schofield; newcomers Daniel Hutchinson, Charles Meanwell and Beth Stuart; and, promising emerging artists: Jennifer Carvalho, David Hucal, and Manny Trinh.
The idea behind Painting Hamilton has been brewing for nearly five years, said Melissa Bennett, curator of the exhibition and AGH Curator of Contemporary Art. Since arriving in Hamilton, Ive had the privilege of making hundreds of studio visits. I feel privileged to work with these artists and to have been a part of conversations with them in their studios. I hope this exhibition will be a highlight in their careers and look forward to other opportunities that may arise as a result.
