BOSTON, MASS.- Nathaniel Silver joins the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as Assistant Curator of the Collection.

A specialist in European paintings, drawings, and sculpture, Silver has published and lectured extensively in the field of Italian Renaissance Art. He held prestigious fellowships and internships at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The J. Paul Getty Museum, and most recently, at the Frick Collection. At the Frick, Silver curated the highly acclaimed Piero della Francesca in America exhibition in 2013 and edited and contributed to the accompanying catalogue.

To advance the field of Renaissance studies, Silver has worked extensively on first-hand examination of objects as well as communicating his research findings to as wide an audience as possible through innovative public programs, talks, publications, and online projects. The catalogue for Piero della Francesca in America is in its second printing, and the exhibition’s web-based interactive component remains an enduring contribution to the field and a useful educational tool on the internet.

Silver will bring this combination of scholarly and interpretive skills to his new position at the Gardner Museum as he works closely with the Collections team, in the Conservation, Education, Marketing, Registrar, and Archives departments, as well as on exhibitions, publications, digital initiatives, and public programs.

Silver earned his master’s degree in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and his Ph.D. in art history from University College London in 2012.
