SAN ANTONIO, TX.- Artpace kicked off its 20th anniversary with a unique mix of works by past Artpace artists in its Hudson (Show)Room, celebrating its long working relationship with the San Antonio-based Hare & Hound Press and the Linda Pace Foundation. Artpaces Window Works exhibition features work created during Artpace's first residency in 1995 by the artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957-1996).
The exhibition, Hare and Hound Press/Artpace: The Art of Collaboration, celebrates Artpaces 20th year, is made possible by a generous gift of works by Janet Lennie Flohr of Hare and Hound Press to the Linda Pace Foundation. The gift will increase the number of artworks in the Linda Pace Foundations collection from 620 to approximately 800 and provide support for the Spring 2015 Hudson (Show)Room exhibition.
Artpace and the Linda Pace Foundation, both founded by the late Linda Pace (1945-2007), foster the appreciation and advancement of contemporary art through separate and unique organizations. Artpace, funded in part by a grant from the Linda Pace Foundation, is renowned for the Artpace International Artist-in-Residence program, which invites artists from around the world to live and work at Artpace, while creating new works of art.
The Linda Pace Foundations grant program represents a key component to the Foundations mission and the charitable vision of Linda Pace. The grants support Artpaces international residency program as well as other contemporary arts organizations, CHRISpark, public exhibitions of the Foundations growing contemporary art collection, and the work of contemporary artists.
"The Linda Pace Foundation is proud of our relationship with Hare & Hound Press, which over the years has assisted many artists from all over the world who have participated in Artpace's phenomenal artist residency program," said Foundation Vice President, Jan Jarboe Russell.
These former Artpace resident artists, including Arturo Herrera, Shahzia Sikander, Teresita Fernandez, and Chuck Ramirez, represent a portion of the Linda Pace Foundation's collection of paintings, sculpture, installations, and videos, including many pieces acquired in the year in which they were created.
The Hare and Hound Press gift adds depth to the Foundations collection and will include Wangechi Mutu's series titled Histology of the Different Classes of Uterine Tumors from 2005-2006 and numerous production prints from films owned by the Foundation of Isaac Julien, such as Baltimore, Paradise (Omeros), and Long Road to Mazatlan.
Artpaces Spring 2015 Hudson (Show)Room exhibition, along with its Window Works show featuring Untitled(Beginning), by the late, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, commemorates Artpaces 20-year history of inviting the most visionary curators and innovative artists to share their work and perspectives with audiences. Gonzalez-Torres was an Artpace International Artist-in-Residence in 1995, and was known for his use of simple materials to express often complex, even conflicting notions. GonzalezTorres work is exhibited in museums and art galleries, reaching the usual audience through unusual means. The artist said, I want my artwork to look like something else, non-artistic yet beautifully simple.
