NEW YORK, NY.- Marlborough Chelsea presents Water Vessels a solo exhibition by New York artist Lauren Luloff. This is the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery.

Having absorbed influences as diverse as Indian textile design, ancient Roman fresco painting, and the expanded strategies of contemporary painting and assemblage, Lauren Luloff has produced a body of work in which a raw recombinant act produces an unexpectedly resolved and refined synthesis. The works are built on swaths of torn fabrics (some as delicate as sheer chiffon and others as utilitarian as reclaimed bed sheets) that are glued together in overlapping patterns of color and varying degrees of translucency. The broadly abstract substructures of these handmade and dynamic supports are naturalistically painted with a brushed-on bleach solution in varying degrees of concentration. This process allows for a surprisingly articulate and nuanced brushstroke that evokes, in places, a rudimentary photographic technique like cyanotype, and in others a more loose and painterly effect.

In the bleach-painted sections, Luloff has chosen as subjects an array of cacti, houseplants and trees, seashells, pitchers, vases, teakettles and the human figure in the nude. These are the Water Vessels of the show’s title, but also emblematic of the artist’s sensitivity to the natural world and her intent on maintaining a connection to it. They are an explicit recognition of a certain equivalence and interconnectedness of living things.

Lauren Luloff (b. 1980, Dover, NH) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Luloff received her BFA from Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA, and an MFA from Bard College in Annandaleon-Hudson, NY. Recent solo exhibitions include Galerie Bernard Ceysson, Luxembourg; Halsey Mckay Gallery, East Hampton, NY; The Hole, NY; Showroom, Gowanus, Brooklyn, NY. Select group exhibitions include Galería Marlborough, Madrid; Johannes Vogt Gallery, New York, NY; Halsey McKay Gallery, Miami, FL; Galerie Lelong, New York, NY; CB 1 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.
