Small sample of a large collection of early kerosene lighting including many fine cut overlays, several triple-dolphin bases and Onion lamps, &c.



MT. CRAWFORD, VA.- Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will hold one of the strongest auctions of 18th and 19th Century Glass and Lighting that it has ever held, on May 20, 2015 beginning at 9:30 am ET. Special highlights include an important Pittsburgh blown, cut and engraved celery vase featuring a detailed landscape depicting a seated greyhound, possibly by Bakewell, Page & Bakewells, circa 1830; and a rare Americo-Bohemian ruby-stained tankard engraved with an east view of the “Capitol Washington,” circa 1860.

The 900-lot sale comprises items from the collections of Dr. Larry McCallister of Muncie, IN and James Federline of Butler, TN; the Lowell/Lomas collection of Boston, MA and Hopkinton, NH that was started in the 1930s; museum consignments; plus others.

The auction also features colored candlesticks including five rare New England Glass Co. Caryatids; a large collection of early kerosene lighting including outstanding cut overlays, triple-dolphin bases, fine Onion lamps, marriage lamps, etc.; whale oil and fluid lighting including many rare colored examples; rare Pittsburgh and other cut and engraved wares; pattern- and pillar-molded wares; rare pressed lacy including salts; a collection of cup plates; children's toys; many colored decanters; cologne bottles; utility bottles and historical flasks; flint EAPG; plus more.

Of special note is a large array of Sandwich and other vases in rare colors including spectacular pairs of Tulip, Loop/Leaf, and Bigler examples in citron, peacock green, and teal blue respectively. A fine selection of free-blown glass includes collections of pans/bowls and witch balls, and an extremely rare American free-blown bird-form salt.

Another special part of the sale includes a group of articles deaccessioned from a Virginia institution to benefit the collections and conservation funds, featuring an outstanding collection of blown three-mold wares including an unlisted blue GI-24 creamer, a group of rare decanters with content designations, and an unlisted GII-33 barrel-form mug.

The complete catalogue will be posted around May 11. The auction is on public view May 18-19 from 10 am to 6 pm, and the day of sale, 8 am until the last lot is auctioned.
