NEW YORK, NY.- Bonhams will be offering a large number of exquisite vintage wristwatches and pocket watches at the June 9 auction of Fine Watches and Wristwatches in New York. A magnificent 18K rose gold Patek Philippe wristwatch estimated at $100,000-150,000, leads the selection of rare pieces.
The 1952 chronograph is in pristine condition and is accompanied by its original box and original Certificate of Origin. The hour and minute hands are made of gold with a luminous or glow in the dark fill, unique for this time period. The rose gold material and the water resistant function were also rare features in the 1950s.
Another notable highlight of the sale is a fine Patek Philippe 18K gold automatic wristwatch with a perpetual calendar and moon phase (est. $30,000-50,000). Although this model is more commonly seen with a silver dial, this particular wristwatch features a rare gold-colored dial. The combination of a gold case as well as a gold dial is hardly ever seen. .
A rare piece also by Patek Philippe is a 1960s Top Hat wristwatch (est. $12,000-18,000) consigned in original condition and appearing on the market for the first time. It is a special example of a classic and well-known vintage Philippe design with uncommon sapphire numerals and gold textured integral bracelet.
Other highlights include:
· A 1980s Rolex made of fine 18K gold (est. $25,000-45,000). The chronograph wristwatch includes shock resistant suspension together with a black dial with gilt minute ring enclosing applied baton numerals and luminous dots.
· Estimated at $25,000-30,000 is a fine enameled and diamond-set 18K gold pendant watch and chain by Patek Philippe. This particular pendant watch was made for Tiffany & Co. in the 1910s.
· Also by Patek Philippe is an 18K rose gold dual time wristwatch circa 2004 (est. $15,000-20,000). Drawing from the watchmakers classic designs, this modern travel time wristwatch features two correction buttons in the band to independently set the local time hour hand while maintaining the correct home time hour and minutes.
· An 1857 18K gold United States Presidential lifesaving presentation pocket watch (est. $10,000-15,000). As his ship was bound for Halifax, Captain Boyns of the brig, Orion, managed to rescue the crew of the schooner,Standard, en route from Florida to New York during a severe winter storm. The inner lid of the watch is inscribed by the President at the time, James Buchanan to Captain Boyns.
· The most unusual pocket watch in the collection is a seldom seen Universal Timepiece (est. $3,000-5,000). The watch was patented in 1906 by Isaac Pheils of Woodville, Ohio, predating the 1930s World Time watches designed by Louis Cottier.
Bonhams Director of Watches & Clocks Jonathan Snellenburg notes the lasting appeal of vintage pieces in the market, It is now over a quarter century since vintage wristwatches first captured the imagination of collectors worldwide. Despite the passage of time, it is still possible to find rare examples that are fresh to the market and met with great demand in the saleroom.
