SYDNEY.- A major exhibition of recent works by leading contemporary artists from the United States was unveiled at Sydney’s Manly Art Gallery and Museum on American Independence Day this year. Presented from 4 July until 30 August 2015, Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection is a free exhibition featuring 52 works by 31 of the most exciting contemporary artists from the United States, with many works made in the last three years.

Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection represents the first time in 47 years a major exhibition of contemporary American art has been presented in Australia. Drawn from the private collection of Sydney-based Lisa and Danny Goldberg, the exhibition is a vibrant selection of recent American art by some of America’s hottest names based predominantly in New York and Los Angeles. It offers an insight into the next generation of artists from the US including: Tavares Strachan, Haim Steinbach, Richard Aldrich, Sterling Ruby, Davina Semo, Elad Lassry, Cory Arcangel, Jeff Elrod, Seth Price and Walead Beshty.

Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection introduces a new generation of important American artists to Australian audiences, with works spanning installation, drawing, photography and sculpture.

Collectors Danny and Lisa Goldberg, from whose wider collection of more than 200 works this exhibition has been sourced, said: “We’re excited to be sharing part of our collection of contemporary North American art which has been collated over the past five years. Stars + Stripes offers a rare opportunity to experience the work of international artists not usually accessible to Australian audiences.”

Curator of the exhibition Richard Perram OAM, Director of Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, said: “The exhibition captures a fascinating snapshot of recent contemporary art from North America and provides a unique opportunity to experience works by artists not easily accessible to Australian audiences.”

The exhibition follows in the footsteps of the landmark exhibition toured to Australia by New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1967. That exhibition, titled Two Decades of American Painting introduced Australian audiences to the work of a new generation of American artists including Andy Warhol (aged 39), Jasper Johns (aged 37) and Robert Rauschenberg (aged 42).

The exhibition was first presented at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery from 3 October until 16 November 2014 and after its showing at Manly Art Gallery and Museum will continue to tour through 2016 to a total of eight regional Australian centres including Grafton, Cowra, Taree, Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Latrobe Valley and Ipswich. Stars + Stripes: American Art of the 21st Century from the Goldberg Collection is a Bathurst Regional Art Gallery exhibition presented in conjunction with Lisa and Danny Goldberg and toured by Museums & Galleries of NSW.
