SOUTHAMPTON, NY.- Tripoli Gallery Southampton presents Bosco Sodi | Lacquered Papers, an exhibition of new works by Bosco Sodi. It will be on view at 30A Jobs Lane, Southampton, NY, from July 9th through August 2nd, 2015. This will be Sodi’s second solo show at Tripoli Gallery, the first being Bosco Sodi: ZnO, in 2012.

Cracks, breaks, and fissures on an organically bubbling surface aesthetically link Bosco Sodi’s work to our natural, terrestrial environment, while his use of vivid hues such as magenta and cobalt conjure both primordial ooze and intergalactic skyscapes. These deeply evocative textures are created through a distinctive, paradoxical method that combines deliberate, artistic control with random happenstance, as Sodi allows the inherent properties of his carefully applied materials—pigment, sawdust, wood pulp, natural fibers, and glue—to dry and take bas-relief-like form through the arbitrary effects of their surroundings. Beneath their delicate, encrusted finishes, the final compositions maintain the rough physicality and essential crudeness from which Sodi has sourced an emotive power. “In my work, the process is transformative and full of accidental effects, and I try to find in it the beauty of imperfection,” says Sodi.

Born in Mexico City in 1970, Bosco Sodi has been the subject of solo exhibitions worldwide. His largest site-specific work to date, The Last Day, debuted at Pioneer Works Center for Art and Innovation in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in November 2014. Sodi’s first comprehensive artist monograph was released in December 2014 by the German publishing house, Art Identity, and edited by Jürgen Kreiger. Sodi’s traveling museum exhibition, Croatia, was presented at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern in Valenciá, Spain, in May 2013, and in 2012 at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico; the Museo de los Pintores Oaxaqueños, Oaxaca, México; and at San Ildefonso, México City, México.

Sodi’s work resides in numerous public and private collections, including those of IBM, New York; Deutsche Bank, New York; the De La Cruz Collection, Puerto Rico; Colección Júmex, Mexico City; Godia Foundation, Barcelona; and MIAAO (Museo Internacional del Arte Aplicada Oggi), Turin, among others. SCAI the Bathhouse, Japan, will present a solo exhibition of Sodi’s work in October 2015, and his sculptural work will also be included in two group shows: Proportio, a collateral exhibition at the 2015 Venice Biennale, and Museum of Stone at the Noguchi Museum, Long Island City, NY, in October 2015.
