Twining Humber Lifetime Achievement Award

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.- Artist Trust is pleased to honor renowned Northwest artist, Patti Warashina of King County, as the second recipient of the prestigious Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. Widely recognized for her figurative ceramic works, Warashina writes, "Since I embarked on my journey as an artist, the image of the human body has been an absorbing visual fascination. It gives me a reference point to my own existence, the civilization in which I live, as well as my relationship to a historical past..." The selection panelists noted Warashina’s technical mastery of the ceramic medium, her innovative structural compositions, and complex and evolving visual vocabulary.
The Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement is an unrestricted award of $10,000 that is given annually to a Washington State woman visual artist, age sixty or over, who has dedicated a significant portion of her life to her art practice. In this second year of the award, only nominees whose primary body of work is three-dimensional (sculpture, craft, and installation), were eligible.
A two-step process was used to select the annual recipient of the 2002 Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement – open nomination, followed by a peer panel review. Nominations were accepted from anyone wishing to nominate eligible candidates and fulfill all requirements of the nomination process. A peer panel comprised of three visual arts professionals chose the award recipient based foremost on artistic merit. This year’s panel included: curator and writer Lloyd E. Herman of Seattle; visual artist Lezlie Jane of Seattle; and visual artist Sheila Klein of Bow.

This award is made possible by a generous gift from Yvonne Twining Humber to the Artist Trust Endowment Fund. Yvonne is a painter of both urban and rural landscapes, and was employed by the Works Progress Administration from 1935 to 1943. Originally from New York City, Yvonne was raised in England and New England and currently resides in Redmond, Washington. Yvonne established, with the estate she and her husband built together, a means to recognize women artists who have dedicated a lifetime to their artwork.

Artist Trust is a not-for-profit organization that supports individual artists working in all disciplines throughout Washington State. The organization, currently in its 14th year of operation, provides quality professional support information. In addition to the Twining Humber Award, Artist Trust also administers two granting programs: the Grants for Artist Projects Program and the Artist Trust/ Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship programs.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration, nominees must be Washington State residents, female, age 60 or older, and have a minimum 25-year record of practicing their art. Additionally, in 2002, only nominees whose primary body of work is three-dimensional will be eligible.
