NEW YORK, NY.- David Beals Findlay, Jr, owner of the
David Findlay Jr Gallery, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 15, 2015. His family has owned art galleries for over 140 years in Kansas City, New York City, Chicago, Palm Beach, Paris and Beverly Hills. David lived in New Canaan, CT with his wife, the historic preservationist, Mimi Findlay. The cause of death was a stroke.
David was born in Kansas City, MO in 1933. In 1936 Davids father, moved his gallery and his family from Kansas City to New York City, re-establishing Findlay Galleries on 57th Street between Madison and Fifth avenues.
After graduating from Cornell University in 1956, David worked in finance until 1976 when he joined his brother, Peter Findlay and sister, Lindsay Findlay, as a partner in his fathers gallery, now called David Findlay Galleries, on Madison Avenue.
In 1982 David established David Findlay Jr Gallery with a focus on late 19th and early 20th Century American art. Today the gallery is located on Fifth Avenue just south of 57th Street. David was the fourth generation of art dealers in his family. His daughter and colleague of 30 years, Lee Findlay, will take over the ownership of his gallery and will continue her fathers legacy of exhibiting both historic and contemporary art.
David had a genuine love for art and people, which garnered him success in the business and sincere respect among his peers. His keen interest in reviving the careers of unjustly "neglected" Mid-Twentieth Century American artists was a key contribution to the New York art scene, and to the history of American art.
