BERLIN.- Satellite Berlin presents the exhibition Soundings, curated by Lutz Becker, within the series Based on Drawing. Soundings represents the collaboration between artist Linda Karshan and filmmaker Candida Richardson in November 2014. The exhibition comprises new drawings by Karshan in combination with a sound installation by Richardson, which in turn references Karshan's works.

Candida Richardson has referenced Linda Karshan’s work once before. Her film Movements and Their Images (2008) documents the artist’s drawing process, thereby revealing its unique qualities: the utterly controlled lines, done freehand, and the bodily movements that enable their controlled creation. Recording these movements in 2014 was the next logical step for Richardson, as she became interested in how sound could describe visual qualities––shape, texture and form. In the recording of the sounds of drawing, rhythms essential to Karshan’s work shape the drawing in the mind of the listener. Richardson uses this acoustic drawing to convey the high degree of concentration and repetition underlying Karshan’s creation of a drawing.

Linda Karshan lives in London and New York. She was educated at several art schools worldwide and earned an MA in humanistic psychology. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the British Museum, London, the Folkwang Museum Essen, Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, and Valencia d’Art Modern, Spain. She is represented in public and private collections, such as the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Courtauld Gallery, London.

Candida Richardson is a filmmaker and Director of Photography living and working in London. Her films often deal with the work of artists and architects and are frequently shown in institutional settings, such as the Drawing Center, New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. In 2014 her series of short films on architects was given its own room in the exhibition Sensing Spaces: Architecture Re - Imagined at the Royal Academy, London.

Originally from Berlin and currently living and working in London, Lutz Becker is director/producer of political and art documentaries including Double Headed Eagle, Lion of Judah and Vita Futurista, as well as TV productions such as Nuremberg in History . Becker has exhibited internationally, most recently at the first Kiev Biennale in 2012 with his video installation The Scream. Due to his expertise in Russian Constructivism and Italian Futurism, he has collaborated with Tate Modern, the State Museum of Modern Art, Thessaloniki, and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, among others.
