ESHER.- Celebrating its eighth consecutive year
The Esher Hall Antiques & Fine Art Fair returns to Esher Hall, Sandown Park Racecourse, Portsmouth Road, Esher, Surrey KT10 9AJ from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October 2015, organised by The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited.
The fair has earned itself an excellent reputation as being one of the highlights of the Autumn antiques season. Renowned for the high quality of antiques and works of art on show, and the superb layout transforming Esher Hall from a bustling race day into a magnificent antiques emporium, the fair is a number one destination for the discerning collector, interior designer, art and antiques enthusiast or merely someone looking for an interesting addition to the home.
Some 30 specialist dealers - mostly members of the two trade associations - The British Antique Dealers' Association and LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers - take immense trouble to source the very best objects for this fair, finding traditional, contemporary and quirky pieces such as 1920's Berlin fashion drawings by Dodo Burgner from the Rae-Smith Gallery, a rare pair of late 18th century flower tables from S & S Timms Antiques, 20th century decorative glass from Brian Watson Antique Glass as well as a 14 carat gold and silver Russian star sapphire and diamond egg pendant from T Robert.
There is an excellent line-up of new exhibitors giving a fresh look to the fair including Carolyn Stoddart-Scott, Emma Duveen Art & Decorative Antiques, together with Rugs of Petworth, Iona House Gallery, Marais Fine Arts, the Rae-Smith Gallery, David Brooker Fine Art and Brian Watson Antique Glass.
Every hallway, even modern ones, should have a grandfather clock to make a powerful statement at the entrance to the house and W R Harvey & Co (Antiques) Ltd is bringing a fine longcase clock made by Thomas Bawcutt of London, circa 1760 priced at £8,450. Bawcutt is listed in 'Watchmakers' & Clockmakers' of The World' by G H Baillie as being apprenticed to the Clockmakers' Company in 1748. Other significant pieces on the stand
include a Regency mahogany elbow chair with a leather covered seat (£1,250), a lady's mahogany and satinwood dressing table, c 1785 (£4,750) and a truly wonderful pair of Regency period ormolu candelabra (£10,000). Richard Price, BBC Antiques Roadshow's clock expert is showcasing a wide choice of antique clocks alongside Nicholas Arkell, formerly a Surrey-based furniture dealer who now trades from the West Country as Walton House Antiques. Highlights on his stand include a Regency mahogany campaign cheval mirror with its original candleholders, c 1810 (£4,800) elegant enough to grace any bedroom or dressing room and a later 19th century satinwood bonheur du jour (£3,900). Regular furniture exhibitors returning to the fair include S & S Timms Antiques and country furniture dealer Melody Antiques.
Original 20th century design is in vogue and carefully chosen Art Deco pieces will compliment any room. A wide selection of Art Deco furniture, sculpture, glass, ceramics, lighting and decorative items can be found around the fair with Jeroen Markies Art Deco, Emma Duveen Art & Decorative Antiques and M & D Moir.
Contemporary art is strongly represented throughout the fair with Oxfordshire based Iona House Gallery showing affordable art from new rising talent as well as renowned artists. Kaye Michie Fine Art has sourced a delightful watercolour, 'Me and Scottie' by Muriel Dawson (1897-1974) for £1,950. A large range of works from the 19th and 20th centuries is to be found with Haynes Fine Art of Broadway showing 'Place de la Madeleine' by French post-impressionist artist Edouard Léon Cortès (1882-1969), priced at £59,500, as well as Marais Fine Arts, Cambridge Fine Art, David Brooker Fine Art and watercolour specialist Baron Fine Art. The Rae-Smith Gallery specialises in 20th & 21st century illustration, design and cartoon artwork and has an original watercolour of Noddy published in 'Hurrah for Little Noddy' by Enid Blyton, 1950 (£3,500), which should appeal to many generations of visitors. Art of the Imagination has watercolours by Steve Hutton, illustrator of their next limited edition book 'Peter Pan' scheduled to be published in November, as well as a good selection of contemporary sculpture by Vivien Mallock, Gill Parker and Matt Duke.
Jewellery is one of the most exquisite forms of art and there is plenty of choice around the fair from Anderson Jones Ltd, Plaza, Sue Brown and T Robert. An eye-catching piece on T Robert's stand is a large Russian 14 carat gold and silver star sapphire and pierced diamond 'egg' pendant, made in St Petersburg between 1908 and 1917, priced at £9,500. A 1950's platinum bracelet set with sapphires and diamonds is ticketed at £26,000 and a crossover ring set with three carats of white and orange brown diamonds by the Italian jeweller Pederzani, (£6,500) are just two spectacular pieces from Plaza.
The fair includes two specialist antique glass dealers, Brian Watson Antique Glass and Mark J West as well as Surrey-based silver experts S & A Marsh and Kent based Amherst Antiques with Tunbridge Ware. Parkside Antiques from Oxfordshire is returning, after a few years, with an eclectic mix of furniture, glass, porcelain and more.
The fair is supporting the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, the conservation charity founded by world renowned artist, David Shepherd, to help save critically endangered mammals in their wild habitat. The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation has its headquarters in Shalford, just outside Guildford and fits perfectly with the fair, as there are a number of exhibitors selling wildlife inspired paintings and sculpture.
