DUSSELDORF.- Our daily contact with trees, the many stories that surround them as well as their powerful symbolism, have always inspired artists to choose the tree as a motif.
Despite thematically related references, this exhibition surprises with an exciting composition of works. Their variety in technique and expression enriches and inspires the beholder, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.
The exhibition comprises paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos of 57 artists fom the 20th and 21st centuries with a particular focus on contemporary art.
Max Ernst, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, August Macke, René Magritte, Hedwig Marquardt and Christian Rohlfs form the group from the first half of the 20th century. Georg Baselitz is represented with a drawing and Sigmar Polke with a photograph.
Beck & Eggeling is showing important ZERO-works by Heinz Mack as well as Karl Bohrmanns works in oil crayon.
The contemporary section comprises amongst others: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Alkis Boutlis, Joachim Brohm, Jonas Burgert, Mitch Epstein, Elger Esser, Ori Gersht, Leiko Ikemura, Karin Kneffel, Desmond Lazaro, Robert Longo, Heribert C. Ottersbach, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg, Emma Stibbon, René Wirths and Thomas Wrede.
On the occasion of the exhibition a comprehensive catalogue with texts by Herwig Guratzsch and Kirsten Nordahl has been published.
