Auctionata announces Sales of Photography, Modern & Contemporary Art on November 20
Sebastião Salgado, Churchgate Station, Silver Print, 1995.

BERLIN.- On November 20th, 2015, the leading online auction house Auctionata will present two highlight auctions dedicated to Photography and to Modern and Contemporary Art. Curated by the Auctionata specialists in New York, the two consecutive auctions will offer 46 and 136 remarkable artworks. Both auctions are broadcasted via livestream on www.auctionata.com and are accessible to bidders worldwide.

The auction ‘Photography’ at 10 am EST begins with one of the great modernist masters of 20th century art photography, André Kertész. Of exceptional note is Chez Mondrian (1926), one of the most iconic images of the 20th century and included in some of the most important public and private photography collections. Photographs from the mid-twentieth century are well represented with works of Helen Levitt, Louis Stettner, and Ruth Orkin. Included are a group of intimate portraits and studies of Cape Cod by Dorothy Norman and two important works by Horst P. Horst from his fashion and personality portrait work. Also included from this time period are works by Aaron Siskind, and the documentation of America’s last steam trains by O. Winston Link.

The auction also represents the changing attitudes and the variety of approaches, styles, and techniques in photography through the works of prominent artists and photographers of the last forty years. The ground-breaking conceptual work of Lewis Baltz from his Park City series (1979), the color works of William Eggleston, and the exceptional over-sized documentary classic by Sebastião Salgado, Church Gate Station, Bombay (1995), are only a few of the highly prized contemporary photographs being offered.

Highlights of contemporary works include Andres Serrano’s Blood Pope III (1991) - an oversized Cibachrome print from the Immersions series which contained his most published, exhibited, and controversial image, Piss Christ (1987), and a powerful portrait from Shirin Neshat’s Women of Allah series (1993-1997), Seeking Martyrdom (1995) depicting the struggles women face in Islamic society.

Expert Miles Barth states, “We are thrilled to present a sale of photographic icons and other important images from the 20th and 21st centuries. With an impressive selection of classic works by André Kertész, Ruth Orkin, and Dorothy Norman, as well as masterful examples by contemporary photographers including Sebastião Salgado, Andres Serrano, Nan Goldin and Shirin Neshat, this sale offers opportunities for photography collectors of all levels.”

The highlight of the following auction ‘Modern and Contemporary Art’ at 12 pm EST is a rare photograph from 1924 by Man Ray of his fellow Surrealist, and the infamous founder of Dada, Tristan Tzara. Man Ray took several portraits of Tzara, but this is one of the most hypnotic, as Tzara stares coolly into the camera. The vintage gelatin silver print, which is signed, dedicated and inscribed by Man Ray, was given to the current owner who visited Man Ray in his studio in Paris in the 1970s. This is only the third time that a signed example has ever appeared at auction. The sale also features an eclectic group of other works by Man Ray and his fellow Surrealist artists.

Another stand-out among the group of Modern works is Marc Chagall’s Les fiancés aux deux bouquets (Paravent). This four-panel lithographic screen was completed at the same time Chagall was working on the ceiling for the Paris Opera House, evident in the overlapping romantic motifs. Other modern masters featured in this auction include Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and Ilya Chashnik.

In addition, Andy Warhol is well represented with 19 works, including three from his 1986 Cowboys and Indians portfolio. There is also a unique painting on paper of General Custer, which is the only known painting of Custer executed by Warhol.

Prints & Contemporary Art Director, Deborah Ripley, states, “We are delighted to continue our Fall season with a strong group of attractively priced Contemporary, Pop and Modern works on paper as well as a fine selection of sculpture multiples.”

Among the multiples offered is Victor Vasarely’s monumental tribute to Op Art on his 80th birthday, Colonne, as well as Duane Hanson’s uncanny study of his one-year old grandson, Christopher Paul Hanson, and three lively painted wood sculptures from CoBrA artist Karel Appel’s Circus series, including Clowne avec trompette.
