NEW YORK, NY.- From 16 November to 18 December
Sothebys New York hosts Wild Things: The Art of Maurice Sendak a selling exhibition of drawings, watercolors, and set pieces by the beloved author. Sendak is best known for his 1963 creation Where The Wild Things Are, widely recognized as one of Americas most cherished childrens books. The exhibition features 47 illustrations most of which were created by Sendak for the work making it the most complete group of Wild Things to have appeared on the market. The exhibition was assembled during the past forty-five years by two private collectors and close friends of the artist with the majority of the material never before offered for public sale.
The works on view range from pencil sketches and watercolors for published posters, a privately produced intaglio etching from the late 1970s of the wild thing Moishe and a three-dimensional sculpture of a Wild Thing cow uniquely decorated for a charity fundraiser to help finance the American premiere of Brundibar at the Chicago Opera Theater.
