LONG ISLAND CITY, NY.- New York’s
Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques in Long Island City, who just celebrated its five-year anniversary, topped their own house record with the sale of an Antonio Bandeira Brazilian oil on canvas for $168,000, making it the top selling item in the auction house’s five year history at their November 21st sale. The auction also set records as the top grossing auction of the year thus far at Capo Auction, bringing in just under $400,000.
A great deal of interest surrounded the Antonio Bandeira (Brazilian 1922-1967) - Paysage. Oil on canvas, 1956, which came up early in the sale and set the tone for the entire day. The piece is signed and dated (LR). Signed, dated and inscribed on reverse “Antionio Bandeira, 1956, Paysage, Painted in Paris.” Frame size 35 x 30 inches, canvas size 24 x 29 inches. Framed. Provenance: The Estate of Marcia Kirchner, a gift of the artist and sold for $168,000 to a telephone bidder in Brazil.
Bidding on two Asian paintings also contributed to the excitement of the day, as a Chang Ucchin (Korean, 1918–1990)Untitled. Oil on canvas, 1987. Signed and dated (LL). Frame size 23 x 18 inches, sight size 15.5 x 10.5 inches. Framed, sold for $18,000 and a Tay Bak Koi (Singaporean, 1939–2005) Coffee Table with Calligraphy. Oil on canvas laid on board. Signed 'Bak Koi' (LL). Frame size 41 x 33 inches, board size 34 x 26 inches. Framed. Provenance: From the collection of Cindy Gallop, sold for $12,000.
Other highlights in the art arena at Capo Auction included a Continental School (19th Century) - Landscape shepherds by a lake. Oil on metal panel, 19th century. Frame size 24 x 29 inches, sight size 1 x 23 inches. Framed, which sold for $5700.
Asian decorative pieces were also getting a lot of pre-sale attention, with focus on a stunning Chinese Table Screen - Six panel screen with elaborate carved decoration, inset with Kingfisher feather decoration. Height 39 inches, panel width 9 inches, selling for $7800 and Chinese Flambe Glazed Double-Gourd Vase - Junyao ware, Late 19th - early 20th century, the base burnt orange in the firing. Height 22 3/4 inches. Provenance: From the Collection of Erwin A. Raible, which went for $3600.
Various items continued to sell high in all categories throughout the auction, including furniture. A pair of Mid-Century Modern Widdicomb chests & matching mirror - chests with rectangular top over three drawers, one matching mirror. Height 32 inches, width 35 inches, depth 22 inches sold for $6000, while Pair of Venetian Painted Corner Cabinets - Parcel gilt and cream painted cabinets with a single glazed door. Height 78 inches, width 32 inches, depth 16 inches, sold for $6000.
In other areas, a pair of French Cast Iron Garden Chairs - Lily of the Valley decorated backs. Height 33 inches, width 27 inches, depth 23 inches, went for $4200 and an exquisite diamond ring - platinum ring set with a round diamond measuring 8.0 x 8.0 x 5.0mm, flanked by a pair of tapered baguettes. Size 4 ½, sold for $5400.
