GAINESVILLE, FLA.- The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts recently awarded $88,000 to
the Harn Museum of Art in support of its exhibition Aftermath: The Fallout of WarAmerica & the Middle East opening August 16, 2016. The primary focus of the Foundations grant making activity has been to support the creation, presentation and documentation of contemporary visual art, particularly work that is experimental, under-recognized, or challenging in nature.
The Harn is honored to be among a select group of highly respected organizations selected for funding from The Warhol Foundation, said Rebecca Nagy, Director of the Harn Museum of Art. Other recipients in 2015 include the Art Institute of Chicago, Armory Center for the Arts, University of Californias Berkeley Art Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Art.
The Warhol Foundations grant-making activity is focused on serving the needs of artists by funding the institutions that support them. Through the work of twelve photographers, Aftermath will analyze the residual impact of war and revolution on civilians and the environment after armed conflict. It will feature approximately 95 photographs and 3 videos with imagery from Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, the Arab Uprisings and Syrias Civil War. The exhibition will also include work by two artists working in the United States who capture the emotional and physical effects of war on veterans.
This grant provides an opportunity to display recent works by artists whose subject matter is extremely relevant around the world, said Carol McCusker, Harn Curator of Photography and organizer of the exhibition. With the support of The Warhol Foundation, the Huseum has the chance to feature work we would not see in Gainesville otherwise.
Aftermath is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue that includes essays by Carol McCusker and other scholars and journalists. In addition, the museum is hosting a symposium, lectures and other educational programs related to the exhibition.
