NEW YORK, NY.- As hotels move away from traditional spaces in favor of providing more engaging and communal experiences,
Eventi, A Kimpton Hotel shares its new dynamic collection of contemporary art in its lobby and adjacent bar, The Vine. The lobby upgrade was part of its multi-million dollar renovation and with the expertise of Art Consultant Kyle DeWoody, the luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Chelsea offers a vibrant living gallery for guests and locals alike.
· Upon entering the lobby, guests are welcomed by After Paris, a metal figure created by Achraf Touloub using unconventional materials such as car paint and epoxy.
· As guests make their way to the concierge desk to check-in, they will come upon Diplomacy 3, a bright and bold wall sculpture made of paper strips, fabric and wood by Ernesto Leal.
· While enjoying one of The Vines imaginative menu options (such as a margarita with fennel pollen-citrus salt), guests can marvel at Chessboard Collage 64, a collage on glass made by Dustin Yellin. The piece is comprised of thirty-two mini collages, each forming a square on the chessboard.
· The ceiling at The Vine has become a work of art in itself with the installation of KnotBeyond the Inevitable series, created by Kwangho Lee using electrical cord, sockets and light bulbs.
Diplomacy 3
Diplomacy 3 is a wall sculpture constructed mainly from strips of paper, arranged on their edge, so that only the side of the paper is visible. The title of the artwork and series is taken from the Greek meaning of the word diplomacy a paper or document bending or folding, inspiring this piece which was literally made by folding paper. The strips, similar to shredded paper, are used to reference the destruction or censorship of documents, revealing the works second meaning the alternate definition of the word diplomacy to mean the art of negotiating or resolving conflict.
After Paris
After Paris is based on 19th century Orientalist paintings by artists such as Matisse that depict women reclining on the floor or bed. The title references the years when Matisse executed these paintings, after he left France and traveled to North Africa. A simplified take on the colorful, patterned canvases, Touloubs metal figure can be seen as contour line drawings interpreted into sculpture.
Chessboard Collage 64
Yellin is best known for his unique artistic practice that layers painting and collage on multiple sheets of glass to create a three-dimensional, sculptural effect. Based on this accumulative process, Chessboard Collage 64 is comprised of thirty-two mini collages, each forming a square on the chessboard. The negative space completes the squares of the opposing side.
KnotBeyond the Inevitable Series
KnotBeyond the Inevitable series for The Vine at Eventi is a light installation woven entirely out of electrical cord and created specifically for the hotel. The design of the piece, which is one of the artist's largest works to date, was conceived by Lee after his visit to the space earlier this year. Kwangho Lee creates handcrafted lighting, furniture, and jewelry from unexpected materials. His work is inspired by childhood memories of growing up on a farm, watching his grandfather build tools out of everyday objects found in the house and nearby woods. By employing humble materials and traditional techniques in new ways, Lee gives additional significance and function to commonplace objects. The Vine's light installation displays the artist's contemporary interpretation of weaving by using tangles of industrial electrical cord to create the large, suspended piece.
