NEW YORK, NY.- In keeping with
Morrison Hotel Gallerys dedication to presenting highly unique fine art music photography, the gallery announces the New York City debut of A Day In The Life Of Miles Davis by Glen Craig, presented by The Miles Davis Estate.
Craigs singular artistic perspective and intuition with his subjects have allowed for iconic but humanizing photographs of many musical legends. In April 2015 his, at the time, never-before-seen work documenting Miles Daviss seminal 1970 fusion era was shown at The Leica Gallery in Los Angeles.
On Friday, April 29th those images made their East Coast debut at Morrison Hotel Gallery in SoHo. The exhibit will be up until May 12th. Additionally, the much-anticipated Miles Davis film, Miles Ahead, which is directed by and stars Don Cheadle, as Davis, opened in theaters in the US on April 1st.
The exhibition, A Day In The Life Of Miles Davis by Glen Craig features images that document Miles Davis' seminal 1970 fusion era, which has captivated critics and fans, as stunning visuals tell the story for a cadre of current landmark recording packages. These images are featured in the album packaging for Miles At The Fillmore Miles Davis 1970: The Bootleg Series Vol. 3, one of the most popular and well-received jazz releases of 2014. This album has been named 2014's Top Historical Album in the 62nd Annual Down Beat Critics Poll. Davis has won this honor for the third year in a row.
In 1965, a chance encounter with B.B. King propelled a young Glen Craig into the world of music photography. Craigs image of the blues guitarist became a front cover of Cashbox magazine. Soon after, Craig became chief photographer for Hullaballoo magazine. Next, Craig would go on to work with Sid Bernstein, the man who first brought The Beatles to America, as a creative director and press officer. His body of work as a reportage, fashion and music photographer has come to include some of the finest artists in modern music, including such visionaries as Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Beach Boys, The Doors, and countless others.
Despite access to such preeminent artists, what distinguishes Craig is his disciplined artistic conception. Craigs background is his training as a graphic magazine designer, and this greatly informs his approach as a photographer. I speak the language of design and play off colors and understand what makes a photograph both beautiful and useful, he says. Glen Craig credits as his mentors the photographers Diane Arbus, Gordon Parks, and Benedict J. Fernandez, with whom Craig studied under at Parsons School of Design in New York City.
Craig is currently garnering accolades from such esteemed popular culture publications as Mojo, Rolling Stone (German edition), Esquire, The Boston Globe, and the LA Times for his photos featured in exquisite boxed sets dedicated to Miles Daviss groundbreaking 1970 Fillmore East concerts period. Daviss record company tapped Craig to shoot photos that would cross Davis into a more mainstream music audience. The two developed a trusting relationship that allowed the photographer to photograph Davis at home, at the gym, and in the studio. These photos capture the often - mysterious Davis in revelatory candor.
