Sotheby's to hold a dedicated sale of furniture & design from WYETH's coveted collection
WYETH: The Art of Timeless Design will be held on 7 June 2016 at Sotheby’s New York.

NEW YORK, NY.- In celebration of New York design destination WYETH’s 20th anniversary, as well as the much-anticipated opening of its new space in Tribeca this spring, Sotheby’s is partnering with WYETH to hold a dedicated sale selected from its extensive and coveted collection.

WYETH: The Art of Timeless Design will be held on 7 June 2016 at Sotheby’s New York, comprising approximately 200 pieces of furniture and design objects, unified by integrity of materials, impeccable craftsmanship and beauty of form – each piece evoking the singular design aesthetic and vision of the family-owned brand. With estimates starting at $1,000, the auction represents a unique opportunity for both new and established collectors to discover and acquire a piece representing WYETH’s signature aesthetic and connoisseurship.

With a strong emphasis on Scandinavian, American and European modernism, WYETH’s sale at Sotheby’s will present a wide range of iconic and uncommon models across all media by key designers of the period, including: Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Poul Kjaerholm, Paavo Tynell, Gino Sarfatti, George Nakashima, Edward Wormley, Charles and Ray Eames, James Prestini, and Carl Aubock. The auction also will offer a selection of works designed and executed by WYETH Studio.

The full contents of the sale will be on public exhibition in Sotheby’s New York galleries beginning 3 June, alongside the annual spring auction of Important Design.

John Birch, Co-Founder of WYETH, said: “The selection presented in this auction is a collection of my personal favorite objects gathered over twenty years. These pieces and the people that created them have inspired me and brought me great knowledge and joy. The collaboration with the remarkable staff of Sotheby's has been a unique and awesome experience.”

Jodi Pollack, Co-Worldwide Head of Sotheby’s 20th Century Design Department, commented: “John Birch possesses one of the strongest curatorial visions I have encountered in this field. Truly appreciating his design philosophy and aesthetic requires firsthand experience with the objects and artists that inspire him. The pieces in our June sale reflect his unwavering commitment to good design principles and integrity of material and craftsmanship. John only acquires what he loves, and that personal approach radiates throughout the offering.”
