NEW YORK, NY.- The Latin American Art sale totaled $19,145,750 with 69% sold by lot and 81% sold by value. Notably, 100% of works offered by Rufino Tamayo were sold and strong results were achieved for Diego Rivera, Wifredo Lam—with De la même racine more than doubling its initial estimate—and works by Fernando Botero across painting, works-on-paper, and sculpture. Two new world auction records were set for contemporary artists Roberto Fabelo and Nahum B. Zenil.

Active in-room, phone, and online participation was seen from established collectors to new buyers with over 250 registered bidders across 30 countries.

Virgilio Garza, Head of Department, Latin American Art, remarked: “We were pleased to see impressive prices realized for major Mexican modernists Rufino Tamayo and Diego Rivera, which represented the top two lots of the sale, each selling over one-million USD. This season also marked Christie’s setting the world auction record for any Latin American artist with the sale of Frida Kahlo’s Dos desnudos en el bosque earlier this month. The range of prices realized shows a broad interest in the category from new buyers to established collectors across traditional through contemporary works.”
